This web page grew out of the urge to complete SSX, to do all the tricks in all the trick books in all the world. There was one last, lone trick we were stuck on -- a Montezuma 1260 -- and in order to do this, we had to actually figure out the distinction between "back side" and "front side" spins. Suddenly, everything made sense, and we knew why different jumps had different names depending on the context. With that knowledge, and the skill gained from playing SSX for six months, we were able to come up with a list of all the names for all the tricks there are.

A couple of brief and hopefully useful definitions:
Flips are forward or backwards head-over-heels and are in the direction of motion.
Spins are sideways and equivalent to turning right or left a whole lot.

You do a front side spin when the front of your body rotates towards the direction you're heading. If you're facing to the right, you turn left.
You do a back side spin when the front of your body rotates towards the direction you're coming from. If you're facing to the right, you turn to the right.

Key:
FS = Front Side
BS = Back Side
Color is used to distinguish front side from back side in the cases where it matters.

Notes:
The easiest place to try jumps on is the first big jump in Pipedream. When you hit the metal bars, come to a stop (with the back button), then you can pre-wind all the way to the jump without fear of leaving the ground.

Every single one of the labelled tricks on this page has been observed. No assumptions are made anywhere. Really.

A spin of 1920 or greater is labelled "???" and called "Sick!", as is a quadruple (or better?) flip. We have not seen any exceptions to this. This means the announcer will never say that you got a Quadruple Misty, which is too bad.

All flips & spins are the same for all the boards. At least, this has never been contradicted, with extensive tests on freestyle and BX boards, and spot-checking with alpine boards. If you discover that the Torpedo 1800 has a different name on an alpine board, please write in, and tell me which trick boost you used to get it. ;-)

A Rodeo 1800 is a neat looking jump.

We had to read snowboarding websites for a while to figure out how to do the McTwist. Seeing the game cross over into reality (albeit extreme reality) was fun. Similarly, watching the Olympic freestyle ski jumping, where the winning trick was essentially a triple rodeo 1800, was very, very cool. Who says SSX is unbelievable?

Contributors:
Jen helped double-confirm that the "Roadkill" trick really is the same in both directions, and was the first to do a Misty off the very first hill in Snowdream. Also, she's responsible for the practical way of thinking about how to do a front-side or back-side spin.

Changes:
v 1.01: Added triples Ambulance Trip, Shellcracker 720.
v 1.02: Added double flip 180s, notes.
v 1.03: Added rodeo/misty 1440+.
v 1.04: Changed front-side/back-side descriptions, and added the Olympic note.
