My first stencil...

I was so excited after discovering the stencilism community that I had to make my first stencil... it's an homage to the recently passed Elliott Smith, and his glorious song "2:45 AM"... what a way to go out, suicide by stabbing one's self in the heart, ho hum. For a good post-mortem piece on Elliott Smith, check out "Remembering Elliott Smith" by Carl Wilson at Clink (Here's a compressed EPS file (84KB) of the stencil if you want to writ it large... licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license):

If you'd like to start making your own stencils... for the street or studio... get yourself some graphics software and head over to the tutorials at stencilrevolution.com:
  1. Basic Stencil Cut
  2. Converting a colour photo to a single layered stencil with Photoshop
  3. Creating a 3 layer multicolour stencil

This stencil would be a big hit up in the northwest. I can just see it all over my old alleyway! A friend of mine had commented on how appropriate it was to play "Needle in the Hay" during Richie's suicide attempt in The Royal Tenenbaums--just days before it happened.
