steve killen, freshmeat submission bin warrior, checking his luggage at bwi. |
tried to get a shot of the shirt. it says "freshmeat.net". really. |
steve set off the alarm. the security guy shouted to the lady with the scan wand to run it over the guy in the black shirt. "black shirt! black shirt!" steve thought they were scanning him just because he was wearing a black shirt. most wars probably start over things like this. |
steve borrowed the camera to snap a shot of the cool clouds. |
made it to san jose, headed to din-din. here's roblimo. |
steve and robin you know. in the black is largo of windowmaker themes fame. about to take a bite is greg, who runs themes.org. |
booth. fearless leader bruce twickler addressing the troops. (mostly marketing people i've never seen before.) |
rob, emmett, jeff, donuts. |
sam mehat, 31337 mix master. |
steve thought this was cute, borrowed the camera to take a picture. he later decided it was really, really annoying. |
the dot org wall. that's sooooooooo much better. new york had the dot org ghetto. if you managed to find it, you saw crappy card tables separated by black curtains. glad to see san jose treated them better. |
poor company way -- the hallway outside filled with all the folks who couldn't afford the mad prices or registered too late to get on the show floor. |
va linux's huge booth. rah rah rah. all the software on freshmeat runs better on their hardware. yes, really, and they didn't ask me to say that; that's right out. |
the company formerly known as andover. |
timothy from slashdot. not sure who's sitting on the beanbag shaking hands with him. |
jon lasser! he runs the linux machines in the labs at umbc. also has a book out, think unix; go buy it. he was there to give a talk and sell & sign books. |
thinkgeek has a much wider variety of cool stuff this time. the penguin on the poster is drawn with linux source code. |
slashdot cliff, umbc jon. |
jon, steve. |
show silliness. |
nothing to do while waiting for a table? go outside and stand on a fire hydrant. fun for the whole family. |
worthy of a second shot. |
cliff, me, somebody, jeff, linh, timothy. those shirts rock. steve missed out on them, so he got to wear mine all the next day. had to give it back, though. ha. |
hector of questionexchange. |
near the monitor: derek, cool marketing guy. on the monitor: cute helix monkeys. |
yes. |
linux.com guys. l.c slavemaster trae in the hat. |
unbelievably bad photo of robin. |
in the long hair, alex shin! umbc lug's first treasurer. quickly disappeared from the scene, showed up again at lwce! |
emmett throwing tshirts at the crowd. |
the crowd. |
the building across the street where the keynotes were given. |
the middle building is the fairmont hotel, where we stayed, seen from the front of the convention center. a very short walk, and the weather was just fantastic. (went to dinner at a good mexican place across the street that night, and sat outside on one of the most beautiful nights i can remember. well, ok, i was on a really nice date, so maybe my judgment was a bit biased. :) there are restaurants everywhere. good italian lunch followed by great mexican dinner followed by steve and i stuffing ourselves on a sushi lunch. this is just so incredibly better than new york. they should have them all in san jose or shift the east coast one to someplace reasonable like, say, baltimore. |
the entrance to the show. steve refused to walk on the carpet. |
san jose is just cute. doesn't feel at all like a city. the streets are wide and uncongested, it's very quiet, and it's disturbingly clean for someone used to baltimore. one quirk i've noticed: everyone pays religious attention to the traffic signals. at 10:00pm, i watched a crowd of people stand for several minutes waiting for the light to change to "walk" even though there were no cars visible in any direction. |
just when you thought the hotel madness could get no worse... the lady at the registration desk asked if i'd like a smoking or non-smoking room. i said non-smoking, and she typed on the computer for a bit, then apologized profusely that they were all out of non-smoking rooms. would an upgrade to a smoking-optional suite be acceptable? this is the living room. in that cabinet on the left is the first of the three televisions. |
looking back toward the door, at the desk with my personal fax/copier/printer. |
the bedroom. |
more of the bedroom, with the second of the three televisions. |
the dresser with the second of the two potted plants. |
the walk-in closet, larger than my bathroom at home. |
speaking of bathrooms, this one is larger than my bedroom at home. there's a bathtub on the right and a shower on the left. the toilet's in its own little room. there on the counter is the last of the televisions. |
looking out of the bathroom at the vanity mirror. |
the view from the living room window down to the pool. each of those rooms along the sides has a courtyard with a door leading onto poolside. rather cool. |
the park across the street has rows of fountains where people can cool off. there were a couple dozen people taking advantage of them, lots of kids splashing around. baltimore kids accomplish the same thing with a wrench and a fire hydrant. |
looking down at the convention center. i was on the 14th floor, btw. |
looking out across downtown. digital cameras should hold fewer pics so people like me don't take useless shots like this. |
word on the street is that this is a technology museum with an imax theater. |
a cool old post office on the corner. it's connected to and now part of the art museum that's obscured by the hotel on the right. |
a small detail just to make sure you understand this place. it's not enough to just install any sprinkler hardware. they have to make sure they get gold ones to match the decor. i don't even want to know what the suite normally costs. i got it for $209/night (billed to the company), the cost of the regular room i was originally supposed to get. so: 3 * 209 = 627. red roof inn would meet my needs fine and probably cost about 3 * 40 = $120. 627 - 120 = $507. boy, what i could do with a $507 bonus in place of a much-too-nice room. oh, well. |
day two, and the giant stacks-o-debian-boxes have returned. these are all slink cds, not the newly-released potato, but each box has a copy of the o'reilly debian book and other goodies, so it's cool. we were begging people to take these. steve later told me that internet.com was actually selling the same box. :) you can also see the edge of the freshmeat display here. our two machines were usurped at regular intervals to display osdn.com instead of freshmeat, and we had to keep going over and switching them back. grrrr. |
steve and the shirt. |
not even robin could stop him. |
nitrozac! the rarely-seen creator of aftery2k, now doing cartoons for newsforge. |
pater! |
awwwww! much cuter than what rob was doing with them. |
the osdn posse. |
the matrix on the big screen. |
cliff. |
a star is born. |
it was very moving to see someone find his calling after so many years. |
steve reminded me i hadn't pointed out that this was the first hotel room i've ever stayed in which has a name... |
not to mention a doorbell. |
