i have piles.

(09/19/2007) lodge road sits on a hillside, and settlement cracks have grown and multiplied since i've owned the house. a structural engineer confirmed that my house was slowly falling on the neighbors', and suggested i contract someone to install a system of "helical piles" at a cost of approximately $∞. they work by digging a series of holes, drilling down to bedrock, attaching piers to the bottom of the foundation, and turning the screw in each to lift and stabilize. they say they can usually lift the house to where it should be. at the least, they can stop it where it is. it should be a permanent fix for the life of the house, with a guarantee for the first twenty years.

work well underway. the bush is gone from beneath the dining room windows, and they look much higher off the ground.

here's the first hole getting ready to receive its hardware. they dug all these by hand, and said they'd just come from a job at which they had to dig down 16 feet!

i'll bet that not many people have had a chance to look under the foundation of their house.
