5th April 1997: Tinned and silvered 'lorica segmentata'

The recent publication of Roman military finds from Oberwinterthur (CH - see below Recent Publications) reveals, perhaps for the first time, that the lobate hinges on 'lorica segmentata' could be tinned or silvered. The report illustrates such a hinge from Baden Du Parc (CH).

In 1993, the publication of a collection of material from the Rhine near Xanten included an upper shoulder guard from 'lorica segmentata' which showed signs of the iron plate having been tinned (Schalles and Schreiter 1993, 50).
