Biographical Information

Hewlett-Packard Company

• Senior Scientist, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, 1994-2000 (now retired)
  Developed web-metrics and personal database systems.
  Contributed to compiler development for the HP/Intel IA-64 microprocessor architecture.
• Director, Management Technology Development, 1991-1993
  Developed processes for use by managers of R&D at all levels.
• Director, California Language Laboratory, 1987-1990
  Introduced the C++ programming language on HP-UX systems
  and initiated its standardization by ANSI/ISO.

Bell Laboratories (now -- was AT&T then!)

• Head, UNIX Language Development Department, 1981-1987
  Led the standardization of the C language by ANSI.
  Introduced the first commercial compiler for C++.

Personal Interests

I am Communication Chairman and Treasurer of the Northern California Region of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. A Past President of Congregation Kol Emeth in Palo Alto, I am now Program Chairman and Treasurer of its Retired Men's Club.

My son, Dan (UC Berkeley: BA 1992, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa; MBA 1998), a past president of the Bay Area Young Blues and winner of the California Alumni Association's Young Alumnus of the Year Award for 1998, has infected me with an appreciation of Cal football and men's basketball. My wife, Rochelle, supports this often frustrating pursuit, but occasionally roots for Stanford (except against Cal)!

My daughter, Debra (Yale University, BA 1989, summa cum laude), is a 1994 graduate of Stanford Law School, which leads to some very lively discussions around the time of the Big Game!

Debra married Adrian Vernon on October 3, 2004 in Hawaii; they have a son, Ryan Matthew Vernon, born May 1, 2006, and a daughter, Natalie Renée Vernon, born June 8, 2008.

Dan married the former Debbie Cohen on May 21, 2005 in Chicago; they also have one son, Jacob Auritt Rosler, born January 27, 2008.

I am a bridge theorist and writer, and an International Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League.
